CertainTeed Vapor Retarder

green654 | Posted in General Questions on

In Zone 5. If this is installed properly, will it prevent moisture in the wall cavity? And if installed incorrectly with small holes or gaps, this will cause moisture in the wall cavity?

CertainTeed's instructions advise you to tape any holes that are more than two inches wide or four inches long. But I think interior conditions would have to be considered as well (a room with an indoor pool, for example). Why are you asking these questions, if you don't mind me asking?

I’m asking because my builder is installing it and I don’t trust him to be careful and to do a careful job.

      Green654,

It depends on what you are using it for. If it's just as a vapour-retarder then a few holes makes very little difference. If it's also supposed to act as an air-barrier it needs to be completely continuous.

Membrain is a bit delicate based on what I've read. Pro Clima makes more robust products, but they are more expensive. Can you inspect the work before it is covered?
