WRB/Insulation options for Zone 5 Custom Home

docwisdom | Posted in Energy Efficiency and Durability on

Hi all,

My wife and I will be starting our custom home build this spring (fingers crossed) and I have been researching a lot over the last two years into making the building envelope and ventilation the best it can be.
I have started pricing out WRB and insulation options and wanted to get some opinions on what might be the best bang for our buck in northern climate zone 5 (0F-110F)

We plan to have a 2×6 assembly with rockwool interior insulation and OSB or plywood sheathing depending on the going price when it gets put up. Cladding is going to be standing seam in most areas and stucco the rest.

Over that I have considered 3 options.
1. Henry VP100 + ComfortBat 1.5″ + Rain screen
2. Prosoco MVP + ComfrotBat 1.5″ + Rain screen
3. Halo Exterra 1.5″ + Rain screen (they claim it works as a WRB)

These 3 options seem to be within $1-2k of each other in the grand scheme of things.

I appreciate your insights.

I would go with whichever your builder is more comfortable with. My guess is that the rigid foam (Halo Exterra) will be easier.
