wood stove install in 2 story house

steveeee | Posted in General Questions on

i have a wood burning stove and looking into how to install it. i have a 2 story house and would like to go thru the roof, not the wall.

is it ok to run single wall flue pipe up thru both floors, using the big metal boxes as i run through the floor and the ceiling on 2nd floor?

thanks

You don't want to risk burning down your house by relying on input from the Internet. You should follow the manufacturer's installation instructions.

Not only should you, but the IRC requires you to follow manufacturers' instructions: https://codes.iccsafe.org/content/IRC2021P1/chapter-10-chimneys-and-fireplaces#IRC2021P1_Pt03_Ch10_SecR1005.

Suppliers like Selkirk have all of the components you will need to run the chimney through both your floor and roof. Just make sure you are using the right component for the right application, there are different components for flat ceilings or sloped ceilings, for example. Any of the major companies will have good support staff that you can call and they will walk you through what you need.
Typically for going through a floor, you will have a bracket that gets nailed into the floor opening, this bracket will support the double walled pipe that runs up to the roof. A chase is then built around the whole thing.
For insurance purposes you will probably need the installation to be inspected by a 3rd party, you could also call the company that will be inspecting for advice.

I don't think you can even use single wall pipe anywhere anymore. Maybe from the stove to a masonry flue, but certainly not through floors and roofs.
