Will I regret a compact washer and dryer?

joenorm | Posted in General Questions on

New Construction. 1400squarefoot house. Two of us living there now but could be three in the future.

I really want the Miele heat pump dryer but that sort of pushes me into the compact realm of washing and drying.

I am not scared of doing a few extra loads and I am generally a little weary of American supersizing of everything anyway.

Will I regret not getting a standard washer/dryer? Will the compact Miele do the trick?

    Joe,

We had a compact washer and heat pump dryer in our last house. While the run times for the dryer were longer, it worked fine. Now, if you have a fluffy king-size comforter, stuffing that thing into the washer and dryer units might prove challenging.

      That's what laundromats are for!

We are a household of three and have the Miele compact combo. Love it. We use the extra dry setting for the dryer as otherwise it comes out a tiny bit damp. No regrets for 2 adults and a child.

Your biggest limitations will be more smaller loads, and issues with anything big like blankets or comforters that won’t fit. If you’re ok with more smaller loads, and you don’t mind an occasional laundromat run for the odd big item or two you’ll be fine.

That said, I used to have a small washer dryer and now have a larger unit. I’d never go back. If you’re nervous about the smaller loads, check the rated volume of the machine you’re considering and measure that volume into a laundry basket. See how much fits in the basket after marking off the washer’s rated volume with some tape. If it seems too small, you may want to reconsider your choice of machine. If you think you’ll be ok with the amount of stuff you fit in the basket, then you’ll probably be ok.

For big items, I prefer to do them on a hot summer day and put them on a line in the backyard. Saves time and hassle is zero. Laundromat is not necessary.

For two people, compact units are the best.

We've got the W1/T1 combo as well and its great. The heat pump dryer is great.
