in general I stay away from Vinyl but the fiberglass looks like a promising replacement for wood in harsh environments or hard to reach installations where maintenance is a problem

Cost-effectiveness varies with climate.
Right now, Intus seems to be everyone's favorite brand of vinyl window -- at least if you want good performance specs.
