White birch bark WRB?

nhrunnah | Posted in General Questions on

At my wives grandparents house in New England, built in the 1700’s. Her grandpa was showing me some of the old details of the house. Anyone ever heard of this one before? Exterior of the house appears to have had white birch bark layed over it. This picture is taken from inside a sunroom addition in the 1900’s.

    nhrunnah,

    Not until now. That's interesting.

The house I grew up in was wrapped in paper birch bark, built in Maine in 1817. I now own an 1830 home not far away, and just replaced a window. Previous owners had replaced the siding but under the head casing I found a carefully bent piece of paper birch bark used as a cap flashing.
