Where to install Fantech Makeup Air Unit

Pott0120 | Posted in Mechanicals on

I am in the process of installing the Fantech MUAS 750 which utilizes an 8″ line for makeup air. The manual says to install it in the same room as my hood but I am struggling with this. I want access to the unit for filter changes and maintenance. The plan is to run it in through my utility room through the floor joist to the kitchen area.

See attached drawing

I see three logical options.
1) Run the pipe to a toe kick under the counter top stove.
2) Run it to the landing on my basement stairs. (preferred option)
3) Run the pipe through my pantry and have the grill just above the kitchen cabinets. (I don’t prefer this option, I keep taking pantry space away for HVAC)

Any guidance would be appreciated. Thank you.

Best option is somewhere on the far side of your kitchen.

The toe kick of the range will be okay but it will reduce the effectiveness of the range hood since the new make up air will be taking the place of some of the stale air you are trying to exhaust. Basically it will short-circuit your exhaust system. Also it’s pretty complicated making that custom toe kick with the ducting.

Short-circuiting could also be a problem with the pantry option. Also, upper cabinets should always go all the way to the ceiling in my opinion.

There is some good information here:

    https://www.greenbuildingadvisor.com/question/location-of-vent-hood-makeup-air

You might want to read the study in the link:

Under the range or behind it are both good spots.
