What to replace an aging hydronic boiler for heating and hot water to improve efficiency and lower gas costs?

I have a gas powered LAARS mini combo II that provides hot water and heating throughout our home. It is very expensive on gas in the winter. Is there a more economical type of unit that can replace this system for my heating and hot water needs? Tankless would be a bonus if these can be applied to our system easily.
