Vermiculite Insulation

joenorm | Posted in General Questions on

I am involved with a remodel where the attic has vermiculite insulation all throughout.

Should I be concerned working up there? I have suggested a full remediation to the HO but I don’t think they are concerned and also don’t want to spend the money.

How much a priority should getting this stuff out of the house be?

thanks

You can have it tested. Some vemiculite had asbestos mixed in with it, but not all. The EPA recommends you leave it alone, "undisturbed", but if you do remove it, you need to remove it as a full abatement project just like you would if it was asbestos -- not something you want to do as a DIY project.

If the material isn't in the way of of your remodeling work, and isn't in an airflow area, then it's pretty low risk. You have to breathe the dust for there to be any risk to your health. If the material is sealed off in an inaccessible area, it's not usually a problem.
