Venting a Crawlspace

CSmith65 | Posted in General Questions on

Hi everyone,

So, I am currently updating my crawlspace and correcting some mistakes from the previous owner.

I have already placed a vapour barrier and I will add some spray foam to the underside of the deck.

I was wondering now, what is the minimum opening area to achieve good ventilation? Any rule (sq2 of opening per sq2 of soil area)? How about placing the opening? Cross ventilation with an opening on the 4 sides?

Thank you!

Smith

What you really should be doing is converting the crawl to a semi-conditioned space. Vapor barrier (taped) on the ground with spray or rigid foam on the crawl space wall. The air ducts should be closed off and conditions in the space monitored.
