Variable speed fan for indoor air quality movement

stamant | Posted in General Questions on

I have a basement room that I’m converting into a movie room.
It’s small — less than 950 CF. I’d like to put a fan in that exhausts to the utility area of the basement so that I can maintain positive pressure and get air exchange. I have a forced air furnace but don’t want to rely on it since that doesn’t give me four season air movement. I don’t really want to go the ERV route since the room is below grade and I don’t have a comprehensive approach for the whole house.

I have some panasonic whisper quiet fans but they are fixed speed, set directly on the unit. This type of fan would be inconvenient for kids to change the speed on.

Is there a very quiet fan that I can get that would allow me to control the CFM from a wall switch?  bump up velocity when people are watching movies and dial it down when the room is unoccupied?

I use a few AC Infinity EC fans in my setup. They are quiet and pretty easy to automate as well if you wanted to have them ramp depending on CO2 in the room. For automation, you have from 0-99 for speed. For a theatre, you'll want to install a dead vent or duct muffler. My theatre uses 3 DIY duct mufflers and a return air dead vent that work amazingly well to isolate theatre noise from the rest of the home. Zooz sells the Zen54 which is perfect to automate the AC Infinity fans.

Our home HRV has been retrofitted with the EC fans so the house ventilation rates ramp with occupancy, or turn off if VOC, Radon and CO2 levels are low.

Here's a my thread on fan control with a few different makes/models: https://community.hubitat.com/t/success-0-10-volt-control-of-ac-infinity-or-any-ec-fan-motor-using-leviton-zs057-d0z-zigbee-dimmer-or-zooz-zen54-zwave-0-10v-dimmer/104450
