Using vegetable oil coated plywood as roof sheathing ?

sam_fujiyama | Posted in General Questions on

My concrete contractor is using vegetable oil cut with mineral spirits as a release agent for his forms.   I’m going to be left with quite a few sheets of 5/8″ plywood after we to strip them (extras which i have purchased).

I was considering reusing them for my roof sheathing (oiled side down), but a bit worried about bacterial growth when the oil goes rancid.

Thoughts ?

Going rancid just means that the oil has oxidized. It might be somewhat more attractive to mold than plain plywood but I doubt it would make a huge difference. You could flood the sheet with mineral spirits to dissolve it, or hit it with a blowtorch to burn off the oil.

This used to be customary. Except it was used motor oil, not vegetable oil.
