Unconditioned attic insulation

Alysa_nunez | Posted in General Questions on

Live in climate zone 2 Austin Tx. Removed all old insulation in my 1971 attic and re-insulating. Would like run my insulation plan by someone willing to review here.

Current attic: Unconditioned hip roof, vent ridge on top and soffits on bottom. 3 ductless minisplit cassettes installed in attic. 2×4 trusses.

Plan: Re install 2″ depth baffles to ensure proper air flow to ridge vent. Air seal  with fire or pest control block. Insect mesh on all roof vents. Fur out 2×4 trusses with 2×2 furring strips for Rockwool r-15 batts on attic ceiling. Blow in green fiber cellulose to r-45 on attic floor.

The elephant in your attic is the fact it is a very bad idea to put HVAC equipment in a vented attic.

The fact you are in TX makes it almost a certainty your attic is full of equipment and leaky flexible ductwork.

I know it is a waste of time to say it and it will never happen but the smart move would be to get the HVAC out of the attic and cover the attic floor with R60 of cheapest fluffy insulation.

I have ductless mini split ceiling cassettes. No leaky ducts.
