Tongueless Advantech

pjpfeiff | Posted in General Questions on

I’m replacing the subfloor in a new bathroom.  For some reason I thought it would be a good idea to cut the tongue off the a sheet of Advantech thinking it would be against the wall, but as it turns out it’s actually the grooved edge that is against the wall.  So do I scrap this sheet or can I salvage it by, say, joining it and the next step with pieces of 1x material screwed underneath along the edge where the tongue should be?

I would scrap it. You've already thought about it too long. It doesn't really matter, except you'll think about it for the next 20 years every time you go in the bathroom, lol.

No issue with your solution. Just make sure to glue and fasten both sheets to the blocking.
Usually when installing T&G sheets though, you do install them with the tongue ‘behind you’ so that way you are not bashing on the tongue of the next sheet with a hammer and a 2x. Not sure of your exact situation, but I would typically install the tongue edge to the wall like you initially thought.

    T. Barker, haha, very good points. It may well drive me crazy every time I stepped in this bathroom, so I took your advice. This mistake on the one easy thing I had to do today made me lose my mind a little--especially when the realization came right after admiring what a perfect cut I had made (for once).
