The other uses of housewrap

myoon595 | Posted in General Questions on

Tyvek housewrap — a lot left over.
Can I use it to cover the crawlspace bottom and side wall?
Thank you in advance.

    Mansig,
No, you shouldn't use Tyvek to cover the floor and walls of your crawl space.

What you want is a vapor barrier (for example, 6 mil polyethylene). A vapor barrier will prevent moisture in the soil from evaporating and entering your house.

Tyvek is designed to be vapor-permeable. It allows water vapor to move right through it. So you definitely don't want to use it on your crawl space floor.

However, the outside raining water doesn't go through the wrap but inside vapor is go though the wrap. so.. If I install the printed side down to the floor, the vapor can't go though the paper. NO?
If this is not good for the cover of the basement, any other recommendation? Donation?

    Mansig,

Tyvek is the same on both sides. it makes no difference which way you install it.

If you Google "other uses for Tyvek" you can find some good uses for it including making painting overalls, envelopes and halloween costumes.

If you're looking to get rid of it, there's always Craigslist. You might make a few bucks.
