Standing seam roof install in 6a
We’re having a standing seam metal roof installed on our two story 100 year old house in Minneapolis. Our attic has A/C ductwork in it and was air sealed and insulated to R-50 15 years ago. Walls are insulated to R-14. An auditor said its now probably closer to R-40. I’m currently de-energizing knob and tube I didn’t know about and then we’ll be re-air sealing it. Our soffits are not vented. We have gable vents and the roofing plan is to install Ice and Water on the whole roof with a ridge vent along the peak. We do not currently have moisture issues in our attic. We have had ice dams in the past as do … pretty much everyone in our neighborhood, but we’ve felt lucky that they haven’t been that bad or damaged the house that we’re aware of. So the ice and water underlayment sounded protective. We briefly considered the idea of making our roof a hot roof but it seems really expensive to have less insulation and more area to heat.
Of course now that we’ve signed the contract I’m second guessing. We’d like to do a blue roof, but instead I think we’ll do galvalume plus since we do have the A/C ducting in the attic. I’d love feedback on that as well. Thanks for feedback and advice! (photo attached of our house in the winter)
