Spray foam direct on dirt foundation

Paprika7904 | Posted in Energy Efficiency and Durability on

Can spray foam insulation be applied directly to dirt with 2” gap to floor joists without moisture barrier?
then spray underside of subfloor and seal seams from top side?

This would probably work, but I'd be concerned with future seperation issues. Spray foam can be sprayed against pretty much anything, but since "dirt" isn't really a solid material, the spray foam may be able to seperate by essentially peeling off the outermost layer of dirt particles. Whether or not this would be a problem in your application, where the spray foam layer is basically trapped between the dirt and the studwall, would be up to you.
