Siding Fasteners

ltgrimms | Posted in General Questions on

I’m building my first house and I’m processing and installing my own siding. The siding will be a horizontal lapped, painted, pine siding. My question is about fastening wooden siding. My understanding of lapped siding is that it is nailed at the top and then the board above covers the nails and that nailing top and bottom of a board would cause cracking due to moisture changes and wood movement. Does anyone know if this is correct? If so what stops the bottom of the boards from ‘clapping’ in the wind?

I’ve included a drawing to show how I think siding is usually installed.
Thanks for any input.

    Anthony,

The temptation is to blind nail the way you do with Hardi-plank, but with wood channel you are better off doing as this link suggests: https://www.realcedar.com/siding/installation/profiles/lap/
