Search tips?

NoCO_Doug | Posted in General Questions on

Basic search questions:
* How to find posts by a particular username?
* How to find posts with a specific title?

Seems like these should be easy but I’m not having any luck.
Thanks,
Doug

There is a magnifying glass icon at the top right of the screen, at least on my desktop PC. It didn't used to work well, but I just tried it with a few different terms, including authors/commenters and it seems to be working well now.

You can also do what I do and use Google to search the site, using a term like greenbuildingadvisor.com: "spray foam" + "michael maines"

You can click on users' names if they are green and the site should take you to a list of their recent posts and comments.

I use the "site" keyword in Google, "site:greenbuildingadvisor.com" plus whatever keywords I want. Google doesn't always honor that, but it's more likely to find what I'm looking for.

I'd say the search is the least of my complaints, like Michael I'm frustrated with the level of spam. Spam has been around since the beginning of the internet, and there are time-tested strategies for dealing with it:
    * close old threads after a period of inactivity
    * don't allow users to post links until they've established a track record
    * give users the ability to report posts
    * give users the ability to downvote posts, and hide posts that garner a lot of downvotes.

DC, I edited my comment shortly after posting this morning, since spam was more of a "me" issue at the moment. Kiley is in touch with upper management and they are working on it. Apparently the bots have figured out how to get through the spam filter. I'll pass on your suggestions, which make sense to me. We had a thumbs-up button for a while but that evolved into the "expert member" designation.

Thanks for the tips. I was having zero luck using the search feature on the site . . . and that's still the case. But the Google search approach is working well.

      I appreciate the help.
