Rigid insulation/housewrap/rainscreen furring

RWalterS | Posted in GBA Pro Help on

I am planning to install two layers of rigid foam to a 2/4 stud wall with 1/2″ CDX.  The foam will be attached with long structural screws through 3/4″ strapping.  I plan to use a 4′ wide uv stabilized housewrap between the strapping and foam.  Can anyone provide tips and details on how to go about applying the wrap over the foam before applying the strapping?

Putting the housewrap on the exterior side of the foam is usually only done with "outie" mounted windows, where the glass is roughly co-planar with the siding rather than coplanar with the sheathing. This is so that the window flashing details can lap properly with the housewrap. See:

I'll be using a peel and stick product and liquid applied flashing on the CDX sheathing and the window bucks as my air barrier. The windows will be "in-betweenies", and the uv stabilized housewrap serves as my WRB behind my rainscreen. I'm working by myself and just having a hard time envisioning how to wrap and strap at the same time.

Wrap it while you strap it, the strapping will hold the wrap up without aditional fastners. I think thats what you mean as staples to sheathing arent and option...

    Walter,
you fasten the house wrap the same way you fastened the foam. Depending on the thickness, you can use a cap-stapler:

But after a certain p0int (1 1/2"?) you will have to use cap-nails.
