Exterior Remodel of Ranch House

Y_Knot | Posted in Energy Efficiency and Durability on

So we decided to remodel a 60’s ranch on a basement. It’s 2×4 construction but we are also going to put an addition that’ll be 2×6.
We’re in Deshler, NE so right on the 4/5 zone border.

My primary questions are:
#1 what do you recommend for a WRB over the existing sheathing?
#2 with the existing 2×4 walls with fiberglass batt insulation, Based on what I read, 1.5” rigid foam exterior insulation should be okay from a condensation perspective but I’m trying to decide if I should do that all the way around or not add any rigid foam on the 2×6 addition.
#3 I think I’ve seen the answer but just want to hear from folks out there – with 1.5” rigid foam, is a 1×3 best for furring out when attaching HardiePlank?

Thank you!

    Y_Knot,

    1. If the existing sheathing is in good shape, you can tape the seams and use any sheet WRB (I like Tyvek Commercial). If not, a self-adhesive WRB will help air-seal.

    2. In zones 4/5 I would leave the 2"x6" walls alone, although you may find it easier to use the same details (windows, etc.) on all the walls, and add the foam.

    3. Or 3/4" strips of CDX plywood.
