Reinsulating an attic
I live in the northeast (NY). My home is 50 yrs old, with 2 x 6 floor joists in attic. I plan to remove the old fiberglass insulation – will give me clear access to see holes, gaps, etc… so that I can seal them..
What type of sealants should I use? Is “flash” an option where I would either pay someone or DIY some closed cell foam instead? If so, what type of products are good for DIY? After sealing, I would either go with Roxul, or maybe cellulose.
What companies make good rafter baffles? Can I do this work now in Jan, or wait until a bit warmer in early pre-spring?
Thanks,
Michael Vaczi

Michael,
Q. "What type of sealants should I use?"
A. This article explains all of your options: Air Sealing an Attic.
Q. "Is 'flash' an option, where I would either pay someone or DIY some closed cell-foam instead?"
A. It's an option, and may be the best solution to some air sealing dilemmas, but it is usually a more costly approach than other methods that work just as well.
Q. "If so, what type of products are good for DIY?"
A. You can buy a two-component spray foam kit at most lumberyards or building supply centers.
Q. "What companies make good rafter baffles?"
A. SmartBaffle and AccuVent. Or you can make your own baffles. Here is a link to an article with more information: Site-Built Ventilation Baffles for Roofs.
Q. "Can I do this work now in January, or wait until a bit warmer in early pre-spring?"
A. It's up to you. I promise I won't nag if you procrastinate.
Thank you. If I decide not to go with a "flash", do I need some type of vapor barrier down first before either the Roxul or Cellulose? The old fiberglass has kraft paper on the side facing down. thanks, Mike.
Michael,
Q. "Do I need some type of vapor barrier down first before either the Roxul or cellulose?"
A. No. In this situation, you don't have to worry about vapor diffusion. What matters is air leakage -- so seal those cracks.
