Polycarbonate “glass” block

[email protected] | Posted in Green Products and Materials on

I’m trying to come up with translucent, bullet proof walls, and had a thought that a “glass” block, made out of polycarbonate would be bulletproof for small arms fire. I can find acrylic block, but not polycarbonate.

Does anyone know of a manufacturer/source?

Well, I'll ask since someone is thinking it. What's this have to do with green building? Good luck with your search!

You can buy "bulletproof" polycarbonate sheets cut to size. Would that work or are you "shooting" for a block look?

McMaster Carr has polycarbonate up to 2" thick. A 6x12x2 block costs$333. They are a distributor that specializes in making a wide variety of materials readily available, not in low prices. So maybe you can get it for $100 directly from the manufacturer. Maybe 3" thick is enough, and 3x4x12 is the same $100. Three of those for a square foot so that's $300 per square foot.

It's not UV resistant, so you'll need a covering or coating for that.
