Plan detail for stone ledger panel

user-6152174 | Posted in General Questions on

Is there a plan detail for exterior stacked stone ledger panels?

https://www.msistone.com/hardscape/stacked-stone/

A veneer tie can’t be used, to get 1″ of airspace, since there’s no mortar between the stacked stone. Would 1″ furring strips on the outside of the rigid insulation be used to attach cement board to then the stacked stone adhered to the cement board?

I’ll be building in climate zone 5 and the stone ledger panels are desired on the front of the house.

Thank you!

    Kris,
Your questions should be directed to the manufacturer. I wasn't able to find written installation instructions online -- that's usually a bad sign.

Their installation instruction video doesn't seem to make any mention of the need for a water-resistive barrier (WRB) -- also a bad sign.

If the manufacturer can't come up with installation instructions that mention the need to integrate their product with window flashing and a WRB, run the opposite direction, quickly, and specify a different type of siding.

As standard detail to install thin veneer stone, we use rigid foam taped with approved tape to make it a WRB on top of taped Plwd/OSB, then we install a drainable housewrap, like Stuccowrap, followed by #30 felt paper or 60 min. building paper, then galvanized stucco mesh and then scratch coat. Home Slicker plus Typar rainscreen is a great alternative product.

    Armando,
That sounds like a good detail. However, it's always best to choose a cladding product from a manufacturer that provides installation instructions that seem to be well thought-out -- so that if a moisture problem develops, you've got a manufacturer who backs up their product with technical help.

Agree... however, many manufacturers include no instructions what so ever for the minimum code house, let along anything that has to do with high-performing building assemblies. Down here in TX, most stone quarries will be lucky to tell you that you need mortar. See one quarry's webpage: http://www.saladoquarry.com/how-to-install-waterproofing-and-surface-prep
So the reality of things here is that installers do not go and follow up and search for details. I provide instructions and details on my plans, and yet, unless the bulder is there, half of the time it doesn't get done!
