one way or 4 way ceiling unit for my openish living room/kitchen? or try for ducted?

cs55 | Posted in Mechanicals on

so theres a few issues with my house as is;

1600 sqft, 2 oversized minisplits — 12k and 18k, opposite ends of each other and in bedrooms.  i sleep with the door closed in one and the rest of the house suffers, if the other bedroom is closed then the house really suffers.

the 18k unit is on the north side of the house, and the 12k unit is on the south side.

i’m leaning towards a 4 way unit, but the looks of a ducted seems nice and i could potentially have some ventilation in the closet — its like 10×12, okay sized, which would be nice

the ducted downsides; sacrificing ceiling space in the (unused)closet and the vent is going to be further away from the kitchen. a one way or two way unit moves the air handler to a much better central location.

the downside of the 4 way unit is that i  would have to build a plumbers box to reframe the joists — not even sure how structural the ceiling joists are for my home.

not sure how big of a difference a 1 way vs 4 way ceiling cassette would be for this scenario.

 its now october and i would like to buy something before january 1st so that i can have that tax credit rollover.

my estimated cooling load is about 21k btus, the 30k worth of capacity i have now can go down to about 10k combined i think, the 18k unit is pretty bad and also on the fritz.

the plan was to do a 9 or 12k unit in the living room that can modulate down much much lower than the current units, then replace the 18k unit with a better 9 or 12k unit.  can’t remember exact numbers, but i found some affordable 12k units that can modulate down to about half of what the current 18k unit can do -__-

the long term plan for the south 12k unit is TBD. either a one way ceiling unit or go with a ducted unit and have ducts in my attic with a crapload of closed cell/blown in insulation because theres only 8′ ceilings on that side of house.

sorry for the long stream of word vomit.

anyone have any opinions on the 3 options?

a 4th wildcard would be to place a wall unit over the tv and hide the lineset going through the closet : )
