Non-metal windows spacers

turret12 | Posted in Energy Efficiency and Durability on

Hi!
I want to replace old windows in my place and was informed to look for ones with a “non-metal spacer” as they apparently are more energy efficient. Is that the case? Specifically “Super Spacer” and “Duralite” were mentioned. Are they the best?

    Turret12,

I haven't looked into this in a while, but what you want to avoid is an aluminum spacer channel. Aluminum is a pretty conductive material. Even other metal options are better than aluminum. Super Spacer is one so-called "warm-edge" spacer that improves window efficiency quite a bit. I'd imagine Duralite to be something similar, but I'm not sure. I think you'll find this helpful: https://www.greenbuildingadvisor.com/article/window-performance-4-dealing-with-edge-losses

Keep in mind that there are lots of other things to consider. Search the site for "windows" and you'll find plenty of reading to keep you busy for a while.

I'll check that out. Thank you!

On anything related to glazing or windows, always good to check out http://www.efficientwindows.org. Under their Technologies tab, they have a section on spacers: https://www.efficientwindows.org/spacers.php.
