Need info on “Air Scrubber Plus”

PorterRanchResident | Posted in General Questions on

I live in Porter Ranch, CA – yes, the area that has had an uncontrollable natural gas leak since Oct. 23, 2015. Over 500 families have already relocated (temporarily) and another 700 families are in the process. All of this is due to the horrible smell (mercaptans), major health effects on the residents (breathing problems, bloody noses, headaches, nausea/vomiting, etc.), and the fact the SoCal Gas now states it’ll take at least 4 more months to possible plug the leak. All this said, SoCal Gas has stated that families who are remaining in their homes may request a whole house air purification system; SoCal Gas says the one they will provide us with is an Air Scrubber Plus. I have looked all over the Air Scrubber Plus website and can’t find the answers I’m looking for. Can someone please tell me:

1. Does the ASP have an active carbon filter which will capture the mercaptans and benzene, as well as any other carcinogenic chemicals and gases?
2. Does the ASP have a HEPA filter that will capture both small and large allergens?

I also want a UV light filter in the filter that I get, which it seems that the ASP has.

I don’t care that the ASP is EPA approved, used by NASA, studied in hundreds or thousands of research studies, has over $1 million of research into it, or anything else the company uses on its website to supposedly sell their product. I want to know the answers to the above questions. The people of Porter Ranch are tired of smelling the mercaptans and concerned that we are being exposed to benzene and other carcinogens due to this leak. Please let me know if this filter will fit my (and all of our) needs. Thank you!

    Linda,
You might want to look at this past GBA discussion as a start:

    Linda,
The best place to direct your questions is to the manufacturer of the device you're investigating (the Air Scrubber Plus) -- although be alert to possible exaggerations.

    Here is the contact information:

    Air Scrubber Plus
    P.O. Box 2460
    Camden, SC 29020
    800-864-6585

    Q. "Does the ASP have an active carbon filter which will capture the mercaptans and benzene, as well as any other carcinogenic chemicals and gases?"

    A. Since the web site boasts of the device's use of UV light, but makes no mention of an active carbon filter, the answer is probably no.

    Q. "Does the ASP have a HEPA filter that will capture both small and large allergens?"

    A. Again, there is nothing on the web site (that I can see) that mentions a HEPA filter, so I'm guessing that the answer is no.
