Need help covering floor smell

Masb | Posted in General Questions on

We have a section of new hardwood flooring put in and they used Woodwise patch/filler. The new wood and filler smells are bothering us. We ‘re waiting for spring to finish the floors be/c of chemical sensitivity. How can I block the odors during the winter? It’s in a bedroom. I’m thinking aluminum foil covered with area rugs? What do you think?

You might try a layer of poly that completely covers the floor (with taped edges). Because the poly would be slippery, it would be best to cover it with a rug. Still, this might not solve your odor issue, particularly if you have a forced air system. Are you normally sensitive to smells and chemicals? Do you have another bedroom you can occupy until the odor diminishes?

Thanks for your response! Steve Knapp! Yes, unfortunately I've become chemically sensitive. I'll look into your suggestion!

If the plastic doesn't work out, you could move ahead with finishing the floor. One of the zero VOC finishes or an oil/wax coating would help to encapsulate the Woodwise filler and hopefully resolve the odor problem. Whatever you decide to apply, get a sample and give it the smell test.

Have you looked at AFM Safecoat products? Perhaps they sell a sealer that could help you. I've talked to them on the phone before and found them very willing to help. Cheers
