Mitsubishi Air Handler with ERV

[email protected] | Posted in Mechanicals on

Does anyone have experience with the Mitsubishi Multi-Position Air Handler with the optional Renewaire ERV? Does it work? Most experts here advise against using one set of ducts for both heating/cooling and ERV?

Can’t speak directly to your question, but the controls need to interconnect or interlock. You need separate duct if you have two independent sets of controls.

An article "Installing Mitsubishi Electric Air Handling Units with ERV and Humidifiers" indicates that the controls do interlock so that is at least a good sign. I guess there is still the issue of duct size. It almost sounds like a 'magic box' but I haven't heard anything about it. Thanks for your help.

Interesting. Does this work with ERV and Humidifier together or either one?

This is only needed if you use the simplified installation option. This is how 99% of ERV/HRVs are installed and it does mostly work especially with something like a modulating heat pump where the blower fan already runs 24/7. Note the Mitsubishi install option works with any ERV/HRV, not just Renewaire.

My preferred install is the semi ducted setup (called "ERV with Fan Coil
    System" bellow):

This way there is no need to interlock the ERV and air handler and it also lets you eliminate most of the bathroom fans. The way this works is if the air handler is running, it will distribute the fresh air through the house. When off, the fresh air is supplied through the return air grill.
