Hello,
I am building a detached garage in zone 6B. Zip 54016. I’m leaning toward a natural gas unit heater , because I assumed that my climate would not permit a mini split heat pump only. Am I wrong?

Jeff,
Mitsubishi and Fujitsu make ductless minisplit units that perform well when outdoor temperatures drop to -15°F or even -20°F. For more information, see How To Buy a Ductless Minisplit.
If you're going to maintain the garage at a temp of 60F or higher a cold-climate mini-split will definitely do it. But if you only intend to heat the space intermittently for periods of a few hours when you need to work there it's not the right solution.
