Low-VOC adhesive that sticks to vinyl (drywall bead)?

jamesboris | Posted in Green Products and Materials on

I need to install some hundreds of feat of tearaway vinyl L-bead on this drywall… the spray adhesives typically used to glue it to drywall (before mudding) are hell to inhale and a pain to use when finished surfaces are nearby. Does anyone know of a low-VOC adhesive that definitely sticks to vinyl/PVC?

    jamesboris,

I'd get a tube of PL Fast Grab.

Thanks, will try it. I'm sure my good ol PL Premium 3x would work but I feel like I just chugged a cane of Brakleen every time I have to use it for a while! PL Fast Grab's TDS does have the dreaded "Certain materials such as rubbers and plastics may have bonding difficulties. Test before use," but I'll try it and report back.

Anyone tried Contega HF on vinyl/plastic? It's a nice adhesive but I ran out last month and would rather not pay nearly $40 (including s/h) for a test tube...

The PL stuff will bond to polystyrene rigid foam, so I think it has a good chance of adhering to vinyl. I know for certain that it can adhere to polyethylene sheet. The only downside is it’s very thick, so you’ll probably want to bed the vinyl strips using a roller.

BTW, as far as I know, fastgrab is just a fast setting variant of PL premium, I think the adhesion of both to various materials is about the same.

Hm, that may be a dealbreaker. The flange of this particular vinyl bead is covered with little holes. Rolling it with a J-roller would just force the glue through those holes and get messy quick, even though I don't have to glue the entire length. That's one reason, aside from odor, I decided against PL 3x...

Sikaflex doesn't smell much but I have not read the label

Loctite tub surround adhesive is designed to stick plastics to sheetrock. I've done several surrounds, requiring several tubes, with the stuff and haven't noticed any VOCs or odor.

Thanks Matt, I'll try this. I like the idea of something that isn't super viscous for the reasons mentioned to Bill.
