Is the Chiltrix AHRI cert and IPLV rating meaningful?

ranson | Posted in General Questions on

I looked at the Chiltrix site, and I see that AHRI has some standards for air to water heat pumps, and Chiltrix has an IPLV EER of 23 and IPLV COP of 6.75 (edit: 3.95 for heating) and is AHRI certified. I’ve seen past skepticism about the COP of the Chiltrix heat pump, and I don’t recall exactly why. Does AHRI certification mean that there’s independent lab testing of the COP and EER? Or can an AHRI certified product have untested inflated efficiency claims?

Oh, hey, that COP should be 3.95 for heating. 6.75 is the COP... maybe if you're operating it as a heater under normal cooling conditions? (edit: I'm wrong, it's the cooling COP expressed in the sensible units of W/W) Anyway, 3.95 seems to be the right number for heating under heating conditions.

Today I learned that EER uses the horrible units of BTU/h/W, and this is why EER and cooling COP aren't the same. And that makes the COP of 6.75 *for cooling* equivalent to 23 EER.

So, is there reason anymore to doubt Chiltrix's efficiency specs? Does AHRI certification mean I can trust the efficiency numbers they provide?

I note that the AHRI certificate itself says very little about the unit's performance, so it's very hard for me to tell what is certified.

Change this to "under certain heating conditions".
