Is it OK for cap staples to penetrate THROUGH the sheathing when attaching housewrap?

alumniu | Posted in Green Building Techniques on

I’m preparing to attach Tyvek house wrap to the 1/2″ thick plywood wall sheathing. My newly purchased Bostitch cap stapler shoots 1″ ~ 1-1/2″ staples.

Should I be concerned with all the tiny staple legs poking through the sheathing to the interior blown cellulose interior wall cavity?

Is this a case of “don’t sweat the small stuff”?

Thanks-
Adam

I guess it would be better if the staples were not completely penetrating the sheathing, but I am having a hard time imaging how the exposed legs are going to cause a problem. Are you worried about the cold metal condensing moisture inside the warm wall cavity. Even if you use hundreds of staples, they are not going to add up to much surface area. I'll be curious to see if there is a consensus.

    Adam,
If I were you, I wouldn't worry too much. But it shouldn't be too hard to figure out where the studs are. If you are installing furring strips for a rainscreen gap, you need to know where the studs are in any case.
