insulating a barn loft shop

K1QAR | Posted in Energy Efficiency and Durability on

Have a 1880’s barn loft, 20′ by 24′  in southeast Massachusetts with the usual interior face of bare studs,  roof joists and sheathing.   Use would be a radio repair shop, no plumbing, so  heating/cooling is part time.
The split system 18K BTU HVAC would work a lot less with insulation, so am planning to screw 1″ x 4′ x8′ foam boards across the insides of the studs/joists, thereby leaving the 6- 8″ space between foam and  the sheathing/roof open (no batts).  Is this a good idea, and would foil facing on either or both faces of the foam boards make a useful difference?

Insulation is the second most important factor in heat loss.

The first question is what and where will your air barrier be? Will the air barrier be continuous?

Any type of foam is the least green and most expensive type of insulation and is best avoided when possible.

In my opinion the foil does not add much value.
