How to flash a door sill

tina81 | Posted in Energy Efficiency and Durability on

Looking to replace the door and the brick below the door, as it is falling apart. Any suggestions how to do this? Materials? We also want to replace the poured in place stoop below the door. There are cinder block footings underneath and I’m not sure how to build a new landing/steps on top of that.

Is your door covered or exposed to the weather? Where do you live (some advice is location-dependent.)?

    Tina,
    1. Demolish the concrete stoop.

    2. Build a new landing -- either with pressure-treated joists and decking, or a new slab. Leave a 1-inch gap between the new landing and the house.

    3. Remove the door and door jambs.

    4. Inspect the bricks under the door threshold. Repair or replace as needed.

    5. Install a sill pan in the rough opening. The sill pan should drain to the exterior.

    6. Install the new pre-hung exterior door.

If this work seems daunting, you can hire a contractor.

I live in Wisconsin zone 6. We are looking to completely replace the brick below the door with a different material. I was thinking about building that area up and then installing some type of composite over top (not really sure)? The door is exposed, we do have 1.5-2' overhangs and storm doors. We have already purchased a replacement pre-hung door and are going to try to bang this all out in one fell swoop. The pitch of the stoop is towards the house as we want to mitigate any drainage issues that may be happening.

    Martin,

If I do build a new landing what would I do about the footings? Would you suggest a sleeper on top of the old cinder block footings or digging below the frost line and installing concrete footings? There are currently 2 steps up to the landing. Also, would you suggest backfilling the cinder block with dirt?

    Tina,
    Q. "If I do build a new landing what would I do about the footings?"

    A. I have no idea what kind of footings you have, so it is impossible for me to evaluate them.

Do the footings go below the frost line?

Is your stoop supported by 4 columns or by 4 walls?

    Is everything in good shape?
