Hot water heat pump and wood stove

billstyles | Posted in General Questions on

A main concern I see arising from the use of a hot water heat pump is it’s cooling effect in winter on the surrounding room it is located in. Could you not have a wood stove nearby to mitigate this effect, and as an added bonus the heat pump is surrounded by nice warm air so it works less hard?

Would it work? Yes. Does it make sense? No. I wouldn’t make the wood stove choice based on this combination. A HPWH can run in resistance if a space cools too much. Or you could put an electric baseboard in the space, to accomplish the same thing. Trying this is way too much effort and expense for little payoff.

Have you bought and installed the HPWH yet? There are models that have the heat pump outside and connected to an indoor storage tank.

We discussed that in this thread:

I'm convinced that an outside heat pump rarely makes sense.

The HPWH takes heat from inside the house, there's nothing special about that heat. Whatever the best source is to heat your house is the best source to provide the heat the water heater needs.
