High solar gain windows in NJ?

user-1140356 | Posted in Green Building Techniques on

I’m building a super-insulated house, 12″ cellulose filled double-wall in South Jersey, R60 roof. I think the HDD are about 5000 and the CDD are about 1000. Should I be using high solar gain windows? Would they be cost effective?

    Michael,
You probably want high SHGC glazing on your south side. Be sure that your roof overhang is adequate to shade the south windows in June and July.

High SHGC glazing really shouldn't cost any more than low SHGC glazing -- but of course, in the real world, it is often a special order item, so you will probably end up paying more.
