Kickout flashing for garage door with vinyl siding

MattJF | Posted in General Questions on

So I need to repair the rotted trim around my garage door. It is currently surrounded by J channel. The J channel at the top is missing a folded down tab to prevent water from dumping down the backside of the vertical J, so the end grain of the trim is rotted.

I don’t like the horizontal J channel as it is effectively a gutter that funnels all the water from above the wide door down the edges. It also fills with debris. Is there a good way to integrate kick out head flashing in the scenario?

I am thinking maybe something like widening the head trim to tuck just under the next lap up. Then install kickout flashing under that lap. Would starter strip installed there work to secure the siding? The vertical sides would be PVC with an integrated J channel.

I am a total novice with exterior trim and particularly vinyl, so let me know if I am missing something obvious.

*Sorry the first photo needs to be rotated, the metal horizontal head flashing can be seen under the J channel.

I've never been a fan of the J trim detail at the window/door heads even though the siding manufacturers show it.

A drip edge is a much better detail, you just have to hide the cut end of the siding.

One way you could do is take the J trim, drill a bunch of holes into the bottom and install the drip edge underneath it but over your wood trim to channel the water out past your wood trim piece. You can also turn up the edge of the drip edge to prevent any water running down along the side.

Thanks Akos, I did see one vinyl installation guide that recommended drilling holes in upward facing J channel. There actually is metal head flashing over the trim currently. The J channel is tight against it though, so even if it has holes, not much water is going to go though them. I definitely like the turned up end on the flashing.

I was hoping someone had this all worked out for vinyl. I'll work through it and post what I come up with.

Generally I am thinking I will build out the decorative trim with a bit more depth on top. Maybe something like this: https://www.aconcordcarpenter.com/decorative-garage-door-trim.html

Being that the house is of McMansion style, I feel a little lost making architectural decisions, so very open to input on style. (If I am lucky, one day I will get to do something about the stick on shutters).
