Lowe’s is selling the 50 gallon GE GeoSpring Heat Pump Water Heater for under $1k. Are these units reliable and worth getting OR are there better heat pump water heaters out there?

Peter,
The reason that Lowe's has dropped the price on the GE GeoSpring water heater is that it is a discontinued model. GE is getting out of the heat-pump water heater business. More information here: GE Will Drop Heat-Pump Water Heaters.
Q. "Are there better heat pump water heaters out there?"
A. Yes -- for example, the heat-pump water heaters manufactured by Stiebel Eltron.
