Full names showing after update

kbentley57 | Posted in GBA Pro Help on

Hi everyone,

Not that I mind everyone knowing my full name, it seems that after the update(?) Full names are showing instead of screen names, unless I missed a way to change it in the profile settings.

BTW, feel free to call me Kyle, but only my parents call me Winston :).

    Doing some QA now.

    Hello Kyle,

Thank you for the notice of this change. You can update your account information by clicking on the letter of your name in the top navigation menu, this will open another menu with the option to access your "Account Settings". Here is the link https://www.greenbuildingadvisor.com/user/edit.

    Thank you,
    GBA Dev Team

In case you still haven't noticed yet, it's not possible to edit your screen name there. The only editable fields are location and biography.

    Hi Erika,

Thanks for looking into it. It seems that my the link is still a little broken. When I go to my account settings it takes me to that link exactly, instead of my profile link. I'd assume it takes everyone to that same page. Here's a pic of what I'm seeing.

It has the default information at the top instead of my info.

    Thanks!

    Kyle

I've looked thoroughly through the account settings and I don't see anywhere where you specify which name is displayed. I think this is something that needs to be fixed at the administrative level.

I see the same. It shows the right screen name, but no way to edit it, and it doesn’t actually display in posts what it says it will in the account settings.

I also can't figure out how to change my screen name. It defaulted to a bunch of numbers.

    1. capecodhaus | | #20

We're all just a bunch of numbers to GBA.

A long time ago, I put my screen name as "Bob" but the system ignored it and put my full name. Which is okay, but why ask for a screen name, if the system ignores it? Seems like an easy thing to fix, and it amazes me that these problems persist for years. Who is the Quality Assurance test staff, or do you trust your overworked software developer to do QA too?

    1. jamesboris | | #9

Yeah it's so bizarre that this isn't being addressed... remember what happened to the once-amazing FHB forums....

      1. capecodhaus | | #19

Yea, well its sitting on someones desk in Istanbul so it may be a while.

  8. user-5946022 | | #8

What is the status of fixing this so people can get their old screen names back?

    1. capecodhaus | | #21

      Don't hold your breath.

  9. maine_tyler | | #10

GBA likes changing the titles of Q&A posts, perhaps they got antsy and wanted to change the titles of users too.

Sooooooo annoying. This should be an easy fix for anyone with decent website coding skills.

It's pretty ridiculous this has been going on for a month.

  12. kbentley57 | | #14

Come now guys, it's ok to remind that it's still not fixed, but lets leave the interjections out, we're not 13.

    1. user-2310254 | | #15

      Kyle,

I suspect a few of us have politely emailed Taunton about this and gotten zero response. Wanting a quick update on whether this issue fixed is not unreasonable.

      1. DC_Contrarian_ | | #16

I reported it, got a response that it would be fixed. That was a month ago.

In the meantime I just created a new account.

  13. AndyKosick | | #17

Same problem here. Just wanted in on the thread and to remind Taunton that some of us pay money to support the site and would like it working properly.

    Most Sincerely,

    User- 1067628 (Andy)

More garbage published from the GBA powerhouse, more crap content, more marketing, more website glitches. More random content creators where everyones an expert on nothing related to building science and have zero construction experience. Great job on ruining what had little merit at all. The fact that this hasn't been resolved by GBA shows its commitment to green has more to do with money than environmental concerns.

      Cod,

You've posted mostly negative comments over the last month. As little as I like to bring down the party, you need to seriously get a hold of yourself and quit losing your cool. You act like you're owed something on here, and the fact is that you haven't contributed anything useful in return. Lift that chin up and dust yourself off - you wouldn't act this way in real life, to a group of other people just trying to help each other out (I hope).

To everyone else, I get it. I'm (practically) a software engineer by day, and I'm aware of the difficulties that a place like Taunton is going to have. The grips come in non-stop about what's not working and after a while it becomes extremely demotivating when you're placed in a situation where it's a time/money/capability tradeoff. It's certainly not a high revenue business, and a team of solid web devs working full time is easily a $500k - $1M / year, depending on the location. It's probably two dudes full time at most, with part time support managing all of the Taunton sites - FHB, GBA, FWW, FG, Threads. How many of us do you think pay the $15 a month subscription, maybe 1-5% of the total viewers of the sites?

If the money were there I'm sure they'd be all over it. Appreciation goes a lot further than griping, and it's a blessing to have what we've got in an era where everything is content-lite, ad ridden, and generated by AI's. While I also wish the username issue was fixed already, I've got enough patience, (and other actual jobs) to hold me over until it's done.

        Kyle,

        +1

On the other hand, there are lots of good off-the-shelf forum software packages. I don't understand the need to reinvent the wheel.

        1. kbentley57 | | #27

On one hand I agree, there are mature forum products out there, phpBB and similar. I used to host one of those myself, what not seems like a long time ago, and while it's easy to set up, I don't like the look or feel of discord, it seems so, help-desk like. It's so popular that it's become a well-studied target. If you think we've got the intelligent spam now, it would be like a flood. Perhaps the reason it's been relatively spam free around here is the more niche use of whatever wordpress based forum we're using instead of one of those.

It would break the continuity of the website for one, and two it would probably require constant moderation to remove the torrent of spam, requiring even more resources. There's essentially no way to port over the long history of all the Taunton sites into something like that without starting anew. Look at what happened to the JLC forums, they're toast because of the constant stream of unmanagable spam and hostility towards anyone who wasn't a pro. It's the downfall of the contratortalk/diychatroom too.

          Just thoughts.

I think a good balance might be to implement a 'report spam' feature that a user could click on to alert the presence of spam posts, possibly something like a counter - "More than three reports = deleted post" or something like that.

    3. maine_tyler | | #26

Cod's reply is word for word what they said on a different thread. Just grinding an ax.

The internet makes a teenager or a grumpy old man out of just about everyone it seems.

I'm not too hung up on a glitch, but I do think the changing of Q&A titles is a poor decision on GBAs part. Difficut for the users to navigate. And it comes off a bit... odd and controlling.

      1. kbentley57 | | #28

I doubt there's any nefarious reason behind it. It's more likely the editor though that perhaps it would attract answers more quickly based on the rephrasing. Probably only trying to help.

        1. Malcolm_Taylor | | #29

The most annoying part of this for me is that however this gets resolved I don't know if I'm talking to someone new or a regular poster with a new name.

So it looks like we have partial success, you can go in and edit your screen name in your profile and it sticks. However, it doesn't seem to update the name that appears in older posts.
