Flat roof to house connection

Wadeson | Posted in Building Code Questions on

Hello! Currently building a house with a flat roof off the back. I have 12″ TJI joists inside and am dropping to 9.5″ at the flat roof deck area (living space below) Looking for methods to frame properly underneath that back load bearing wall.

I will attach photos of what i was thinking for clarification. Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated. This will be in Nova Scotia Canada.

I would hang the roof deck joists off the rim. That avoids any issues with differential shrinkage of the dimensional lumber versus the engineered lumber. And although a well-designed and constructed roof deck shouldn't leak, it does strike me as a riskier assembly. Hanging the roof deck joists would make them easier to replace if a leak in the deck ever led to significant rot damage.

Take a look at some of the details here:

Note the spray foam. No way around that one. In snow country you might want to drop the deck from the door a bit.
