Faced or Un-Faced Batts

cmcgrath09 | Posted in General Questions on

Due to the price difference, I have decided to go with R-21 Owens Corning Next Gen Fiberglass batts. The exterior of my wall is 2in of Poly-iso then zip sheathing taped. Should I go with un-faced or faced batts? Zone 6 Northern NH.  I was worried the faced would limit drying to the inside? What do you all suggest?

Thank you,

Chris

    Chris,

You can use either. Kraft facer is the original variable perm membrane and it does allow for some drying, it will work just fine.

Thank you. The non faced is cheaper, but I am thinking the kraft faced may be worth the extra protection and probably be cheaper and less labor than adding intello over it.

      Thank you again.

I’ve often found faced batts to be cheaper than unfaced, probably because faced batts are sold in higher volumes. You might try shopping around a bit to see if you can find the batts you need a little cheaper.

Faced batts will absolutely be cheaper than Intello — Intello is unfortunately pretty expensive stuff. If you’re doing the installation yourself, a pneumatic stapler that shoots “regular” staple gun staples (not the larger structural staples) will make the job much easier, and help you to complete the project much faster.
