Exterior Insulation Over Stucco

Kurt_H | Posted in General Questions on

Hello, I live in a 1946 two story 1300sqft house in climate zone 7, Manitoba Canada. The stucco on the house is in very good shape, hard to remove, and like concrete to drill into. I am installing 2 – 2″ thick layers of Comfort Board on the outside of the house for a total depth of 4″. I will build out window boxes and plan on using roll on Henry Blueskin as WRB. It would be a heck of a job to remove the stucco, but I am also wondering about how tight the WRB is after drilling 100s of holes in it to attach both the Comfort Board, then 1×4 strapping for the rainscreen.
1. Does all of this seem to make sense?
2. Does it make sense in my climate zone to install mechanical WRB over the two courses of Comfort Board rather than the roll on product under the Comfort Board?
3. Will I find 6″-7″ screws/hardware to get through all of the layers into the stucco?
4. Does the stucco need to go?
For how much stucco is on existing homes with poor insulation/air barrier, I would think this is more common.
Thank you for your help,
Kurt

I don't know enough to answer your questions. But I can share that I just paid $17,000 to demo 100-year-old stucco from my 2.5 story home (in a high cost of living part of the northeastern US).
