Seeking Opinions on Best Wall Assembly
I am in the planning stages of designing what I hope to be a Net Zero ready house here in Southern Ontario. “Simple 2 story farm house”. My question is about ideal wall construction from the outside in. I have discussed with my architectural designer my desire for a high efficiency envelop without taking the leap to a passive house structure and they are looking to me for a lot of input on how to achieve this. (Side bar, my dad will be the GC on the job and has 40 years experience, it’s hard to teach an old dog new tricks. ) The GC is pretty stuck in his ways so I am reaching out to this community to get some ideas that have been successful in this climate.
From months of research my thoughts were (from the out > in) 1×4 rain screen for Maibec siding , 2″ of either Rockwool comfortboard or Halo Exterra, (some sort of WRB/Air barrier, still undecided) 7/16 sheathing(to tape or not to tape?), 2×6 standard framing, Rockwool cavity insulation, a smart vapor barrier(or 6mil poly????). Ideas and materials for this assembly would be greatly appreciated. Are there ideal tapes etc for proper window flashing that are readily available here in Ontario? I like the Zip system however I was quoted $68/sheet PLUS tapes, is this reasonable? Again locally stocked product are ideal, covid and shipping costs have made some assemblies cost prohibitive.
I am installing “higher” performing vinyl windows (Gentek, GC is preferential to this brand) Any ideas for similar or better performing windows in the same ball park for pricing would be welcomed as well!!

Hi Joe,
I'm going to give your question a bump to the top of the list in hopes that a few experts will chime in. In the meantime, check out this article by editorial director Brian Pontolilo: Five Walls That Work.
