Exploding vanity counter top
This is a weird one, nothing green building related but interesting. Last night my wife and I were watching TV, and the kids were in bed. We both heard two clacking sounds, one right after the other, from the bathroom. When I went to investigate, I saw the electric toothbrush on the floor. That explained one of the sounds, but didn’t explain why it fell on the floor in the first place. A squirrel loose in the house? No sign of that (the dog would be going nuts, one would think), and still wouldn’t explain the two separate sounds. Well, in the harsh light of day this morning, my wife solved the mystery. The glass vanity top spontaneously split in two, which is what sent the toothbrush to the floor. Has anyone heard of this before?

Trevor,
I have had only one basin crack on me when removing it during a remodel. That one broke from the drain hole outward. Too little putty and too much wrench I suspect. It did sit there quietly for 15 years though. My tugging on it just put it over the edge.
If the basin is really glass and not china, I would begin by looking for forgotten staples in the edge of the vanity. Maybe left over from the shipping process. that or screw heads or tips that went a bit too far. The photo seems to reveal a horizontal chip where the crack comes to the front. Is the basin held down with clips underneath? Leaning on the edge while checking teeth in the mirror could create a repetitive stress that finally got set free.
Last guess would be someone has a scratchy belt buckle and bellied-up to the edge too many times. The final straw may have been quick hot face wash in a cold sink. Glass can be funny that way.
Or poltergiests....
