European door sill extension
Hello all,
Im ordering some Schuco windows and doors from performance building supply. Im wondering how other people have detailed the sill extension on these kinds of doors. I would like to install “innie” style. Which in my case leaves me with about a 7″ sill extension.
Ive read Michael Maines article, which was good. Im looking for other ideas as well, if you all have any.
Im thinking of using a 1/4″ plate steel powder coated for a durable finish and at a slight pitch to the outside.
Thanks

I was recently at a house that had black powder-coated diamond plate as the sill extension and it looked pretty cool. I've seen smooth stainless steel sill extensions but they look unfinished to me--too much like flashing.
Thanks for responding Mike! Im like that idea, it may be more affordable too. Thanks
Something like this is what I’m planning to use: https://www.trudoor.com/pemko/324-sill-nosing/?attribute_pa_finish=aluminum&attribute_pa_length=96&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjwouexBhAuEiwAtW_Zx1kfeT2a2JEouvmlvyBgCV01XiL6szxx-ntqVU4rqHUxPhP3k8AVlxoC08IQAvD_BwE
But it’ll need some fabrication to get it sloped correctly. Pemko has a bunch of different extrusions to pick from to match your application.
That works too, I could just rip down a wider one to fit. Thanks
Looks like we are building on opposite sides of the White Mtns.
Has EAS been responsive to you. I haven't gotten too far with them. Do you have a contact that you'd recommend? I'd like to get quotes on the Salamander windows.
Can you point me to Michael's article on installation?
Hi Beardoh,
If you search "How to Install Doors in Thick Walls", mikes article comes up. Its informative on the sills.
I went through performance building supply in Portland. I had some trouble at first, but I spoke to the owner and he was great. I think they are just so burried with inquiries/quotes that its difficult for them to find the real buyers. I would suggest letting them know your actually intending to purchase.
PBS talked me into Schuco over Salamander. My mother in law just purchased Salamander, so ill have a good comparison.
Good luck!
Thanks! Thanks for the info. That is interesting that they talked you into Schuco over Salamander. Will see what happens when I call. My wife and I are building a simple home with a medium budget.
I'll check out that article.
I found EAS to be responsive - did you email them specifically asking for a quote and provide a window/door schedule and finish selections? I imagine they get a lot of door-kickers, and so spend their time focused on potential customers who aren't just asking questions.
The people who put together the quotes are in the EU, so there's a bit of a lag there, but they were incredible helpful and willing to talk over the phone.
I made a mistake. I should have said PBS, rather than EAS.
Yesterday, I called and connected. My email had went to their spam folder, but I think we are on the right track now.
Interestingly, because of a rise in prices of the Salamander windows, they are going to quote me in Shuco. I suspect that is how conwaynh85 ended up getting quoted for Shuco as well.
We're going through window selection, too, and I was also told that Schuco is now cost-competitive with Salamander. We're getting quotes for both, though, just to be sure.
The competition is Enerlux - they gave a good quote for high-performance casements, which my wife prefers to the tilt and turns. My builder also found them knowledgeable when they spoke on the phone.
Also - Logic Windows was another recommended here on GBA. I've received their quote, and Trae has been responsive and good to communicate with via phone or email.
A different company that I got a quote from is Kohltech. Tilt & Turn out of Canada, but sold through dealers in the US. Price is not too different than Logic....except that no white colors are an additional 25%.
In case anyone finds this looking for pricing info, here's my experience on getting quotes for 21 windows, a lift-and-slide patio door, a front door, and two standard exterior doors:
Seemray is a distributor out of Ohio that imports Rehau windows; their quote for uPVC was very good but delivery to the East Coast was pricey and done via a freight service; no assistance with unloading windows or answering questions on site. Probably a good bet if you're close to their offices, though, and the owner was very communicative.
Enerlux is a domestic (Nebraska) manufacturer of tilt-and-turn fiberglass windows, and their quote was the same price as Seemray's, but it did not include a front door or two other exterior doors and the glass package was lower performing than others. Didn't have them adjust the quote given the price delta. They're also getting popular as they mentioned on the phone that a Matt Risinger video has been good press for them. Spoke w/ three different salespeople due to turnover, but my builder was impressed when he spoke with them.
EAS's quote for Schuco uPVC was slightly higher than Seemray's, but we're in CT and they deliver from Boston, and their delivery crew can assist with installs. Very helpful to talk with on the phone.
Logic's quote was for Rehau, like Seemray's, but it's for a different window line (72mm Geneo vs. 70mm Euroline). This quote was the highest by far, came in the highest, about 35-40% higher than Seemray.
Most interesting quote goes to Doorwin. They're a Chinese manufacturer that's opened up shop in the US and had a big booth at the builder's conference in Vegas this year. Very quick to respond to me, and had the lowest pricing by far, but shipping put them level with most of the others on the list, and while I'm sure they make good windows, given the option between an established German manufacturer or a less battle-tested Chinese one at the same price, it didn't make sense to go with them. $10k for the container to the US + import taxes placed against Chinese windows. A homebuilder could make a killing with these if they combine orders, and the tilt-and-turns are certified by the NFRC. They even included my garage door in their quote! They also might still be good option if you're getting wood windows.
