Encapsulating a crawl space with round piers

pbout | Posted in Green Building Techniques on

As part of my new perimeter w pier/post foundation, I’ll be encapsulating the crawl space with a 15mil vapor barrier (I think Stego wrap). The concrete crew used sono tube to form the tops of the concrete piers so they are cylindrical. Any tips on a clean attachment method for the vapor barrier to the cylindrical piers?

Btw, climate zone 3C. Stem walls will be insulated with 2” of rigid XPS. Vapor barrier will go over the insulation to attach to the stem wall, leaving a 3” bare termite inspection strip.

    Phil,
Stego sells a tape -- it's called Stego Tape, as far as I know -- that is compatible with StegoWrap. I'm including a photo of a sealed penetration in StegoWrap using Stego Tape. (The photo comes from this blog: "Urban Rustic: Prepping for a Basement Slab.")

I suggest that you use Stego tape to seal the StegoWrap to the concrete piers. Remember, a vapor barrier doesn't have to be perfect to work. (If you need an air barrier -- which might be the case if you have radon concerns -- the sealing details are more important.)
