A. No. This installation meets code as well as manufacturers' recommendations. (See, for example, this document from U.S. Gypsum.)
If you are installing 1/2-inch drywall on ceilings that are framed 24 inches o.c., make sure that you specify sag-resistant drywall and that you install the drywall perpendicular to the framing.

Cheap versus luxury....
Same with drywall verse plaster walls.
5/8" feels like a solid wall just like solid doors cost more but feel like luxury verses $30 lusn hollow core or worse the doors made of pressed paper.
