different rain screens with different siding types

nrosdal | Posted in General Questions on

hey, i am about to get going on the exterior of my house under construction finally.  We started and planned to do hardie or lp lap siding throughout but with the modern style i dont think the horizontal lap all the way up is going to give the look i want.

We are leaning towards doing lower half (rim joist down) with LP lap horizontal and the upper half with lp board and batten.  But everything was planned with 1.5″ window bucks giving 1″ ext gps insulation and 1/2 inch plywood rips as my rain screen.  But now the top half will get more complex as i need room for another layer of horizontal strapping for the board and batten to attach to.  Below is what i am thinking but i am open to opinions so feel free to let me know if you have a better idea:

1.5″ total to match the window bucks :

1″ gps insulation and 0.5″ plywood ripped for rain screen on lower half where horizontal siding is going.

upper half options to give 1.5″ thickness to match bucks with board and batten:

3/4″ gps insulation, 3/8 vertical strapping, 3/8 horizontal strapping (not exactly 1.5″ but i think it will be close enough to make work.

1.5 in insulation with no rain screen (i don’t really like this option).

1in insulation, 1/4-3/8 rain screen roll product such as keen dri-wall vertically, 3/8 horizontal ply strapping for board to attach to (should come out a bit thicker than the desired 1.5″ but i think it should work out).

Do the board and batten with the large (4x8 or 4x10) cement board panels. These can be installed over regular vertical strapping and look indistinguishable.

It's not a bad option, but with the sheets being 4x8 or 4x10 I would then have to have some horizontal battens as well which I was hoping to avoid for the purpose of aesthetics . If I do 16 but boards as planned I will have no horizontal battens at all which would much be preferred and also if I'm doing 4 ft wide sheet I would probably have to either add more vertical strapping or wider vertical strapping in order to catch the edge of each board exactly which would cause a complication as well

        nrosdal,

Rather than horizontal battens just use the small z flashing Hardi makes. Painted like the siding it almost disappears.

A picture of our fire hall done that way with 10 ft sheets:

Mixing the lap with board and batten sounds like a cool idea! I'd go with the 3/4" insulation and strapping option, close enough to the 1.5", and it'll still look good. Skipping the rain screen isn’t worth it, and the third option might make things too thick. Your first idea should work fine!

What is your climate zone? If relatively wet, a 3/8" rainscreen is ok but I would sacrifice a bit of R-value to get at least a 1/2" gap. If relatively dry, 3/8" should be fine.

located in Vernon BC Canada climate zone 5 so it is quite dry here.
