Dehumidifier Drain Line Questions

mikeysp | Posted in General Questions on

Zone 4a Shop/House

As pic depicts, I am placing a consumer stand-alone dehumidifier in the office of my 900 sq ft dwelling.

1. Where should I drain to? Outdoors (12″through wall) or mop sink in shop (20ft horizontal distance)?
2. Are there any building science considerations for air sealing drains through walls? P-trap? Threaded connection? Other?
3. Do dehumidifier drain lines have freeze issues?

Thanks.

I would avoid draining to outdoors if you plan to run the unit in the winter. Condensate lines from things like dehumidifiers CAN freeze in the winter. You need to “air gap” these lines before they dump into the sewer line, which can be done simply by zip tying the tubing to the sink so that the drain tubing stops a few inches above the bottom of the sink, or you can get special fixtures made for the purpose. It’s common to just use clear vinyl tubing for the drain line.
